While searching this morning, I found five numbers. All reported within days of each other, that add up to something close to a snapshot of the entire country. Some of them are solid. One of them probably isn't. But together they tell you a lot about how people that summer were trying to make sense of where things stood. Also, you simply have to appreciate the hand-drawn nature of all of these charts and maps.
